5 out of 7 Playstation 3 consoles remain unsold days after being received in stock at my local Gamestop
Thursday
Unconfirmed reports are starting to trickle in about Playstation 3 consoles sitting on store shelves for extended periods of time before being sold. I know from personal experience I was in my local Gamestop on Tuesday, (the day after Christmas), the store was absolutely packed to the rim with customers. There were two 60 Gig Playstation 3 consoles sitting in plain view right behind the counter with at least five others in stock. It seemed nobody was interested at all.I just contacted the store again and it seems that 5 out of the 7 are still there two full days later. Why is this? Is it the price? Are people scared of defective units? Is the Wii just too appealing?
Please post your comments on why you think this is. If you are not a member of HDGameNews.com you may post using the anonymous user id. We really want to know from gamers as to why this is happening.

I have several friends in game retail, and in game development. Their is several reasons for the PS3 "failure".1: The price is too high. Not only is it $600.00, but after buying the HDMI, and paying tax, you are closer to $750.00. 2: after people play the interactives, they are not that excited about it. 3: Lack of games untill...God only knows when. 4: all the bad press from every news source on the planet (rightfully so). Their is just too much going aginst the PS3, in fact, the only thing it has going for it is the name brand, and that isnt strong enough.

with xbox 360 selling like it is now PS3 just doesn't have what it takes to blow it out of the water as it has done in the past. It is very similar when it took over and knocked sega out of the running, check out playstation 3 videos

For those that look at it only as a game console, the price is to high. If one were to look at it as a Blue Ray DVD player that also happens to be a powerful game console then the hardware is cheap. Stand alone Blue Ray players cost $1,000 dollars alone and their performance (especially time it takes to load the dvd and start the movie) is less than the PS3. I simply think the Sony marketing did not do a good job in marketing the total package. Customers with finite money resources are going to look elsewhere when it comes to their gaming dollar.

Correction on previous post....The time it takes for a movie to start up on the PS3 compared to the stand alone players is superior to said stand alone. Sorry for the confusion..

Congratulations, you've found an anomaly. What would happen if everyone who saw no PS3's sitting on a shelf posted it to digg and claimed the PS3 was outselling everything else. These stories are misleading and frankly, each one is the same garbage that anyone with half a brain will not digg.

Yup! I was at a Zellers here in Ontario Canada yesterday looking for Wii nunchucks and they had a PS3 sitting out in clear view for purchase. I have no idea how long it had been sitting there, but I was there for a while looking at stuff and nobody even gave it a second glance.

Weird any gamestop i called do not have them in stock and won't until jan or feb. Same goes for Sears and bestbuy and circuit city. So maybe they are on hold for other customers. And im tired of hearing people say the PS3 is a failure, its a failure because you can get one thats why. If you had access to one you would see that it is far better than the other system or atleast the same level as the 360. yes games are not that great as of yet but give it a month and more titles will be released.
Im not a fan boy but i do have both ps3 and the 360 and love them both. - At 1:50 PM, Rich Gautier said...

I bought myself a Wii, and I had both a PS and PS2. The price was too high for me to justify buying it, and availability helped me make the decision. Now that Christmas is over, and we already got a game system, I don't have that kind of money to spend on something I'd only 'play' with (e.g. load Linux, compile code) occasionally. There's certainly no games beckoning me to buy a PS3.

Sure, if you look at it as a Blue Ray DVD player it's cheap by comparison, but how many people are buying Blue Ray DVD players? Regular DVD gives great picture quality, without all the DRM crap. People may never buy them, even when the price comes down. The PS3 is great technology that's not particularly suited to or needed for playing games. I went to my local GameStop to pick up a used game for $5 for my PS2, and saw they had a bunch of PS3s in stock. I remarked to the clerk that it was amazing that the PS3s were available on the shelf so soon after launch, and he said they couldn't givem them away. I told him he could give one to me, but it turned out he was joking. They can give them away, just not sell them. :-)

Are you all seeing the 20gig only ? i could understand than why no one wants that but 60 is a little harder to get.
And blu ray is a great part of the ps3 which will be used for much bigger games and movies but dont forget it still plays regular dvd's and does other things as well.sure its 200 more than the 360 but you get a bigger drive , built in wifi etc. all that you have to buy extra for the 360 so sony sells in in one package. - At 1:55 PM, said...

Every store I have gone into in Lincoln Nebraska this week has them on the shelf. No one cares... Wii's however sell in moments.. The BB got 21 in this morning (unscheduled) and they disappeared in 10 minutes, that is just from the people that happened to be in the store midday midweek wanting one.

now that they have shipped millions of units, you say nobody wants to buy it, so it's on the shelves...
Why can't you admit you couldn't resist buying an Xbox360 and now you relize in a year PS3 will beat the living **** out of it?
It's ok to say you're wrong...

why does no one talk about the fact that if you compare apples to apples the ps3 is a better value? After having to purchase a HDD, and wi-fi for the 360 you are paying the same ~600 and STILL getting a system with less storage capacity.

Not sure what city you are talking about but there are NO PS3's to be found in the Minneapolis area. If so post it and let me know. Don't be confused by empty display boxes because a lot of the stores have empty PS3 boxes on display but no actual machines.

People keep saying "if you consider that Blu Ray players are $1000, the PS3 is a steal".
Is it possible that Sony is keeping the price of standalone BluRay players inflated at $1000 in order to drive the sales of PS3's? Have you people considered that even a stoned audiophile wouldn't pay $1000 for a suped-up dvd player anyway? - At 2:20 PM, said...

Last I heard, ALL blu-ray diodes were being diverted to Sony for the PS3. So that means no stand-alone players for now. Again, yet another way that Sony has single-handedly killed the format before it even has time to get off the ground.

I'm sure every city is going to be different in regards to PS3's being on the shelf. In some cases people may think they are just display boxes and not the real thing. In other cases you can list a million reasons why someone would not buy one.
Personally I'm not going to buy a PS3 until 1. all the major bugs are gone. 2. the price goes down. 3. exclusive games start coming back and 4. Sony makes a reversal about their spying tactics. I've read many bad things about what Sony can do with the Blu Ray DVD players and I refuse to support that machine. I guess you can say I'm a little bitter about Sony's spying tactics on CD's.
Right now based on value and value alone the 360 and Wii are much better. Their machines are not breaking (well except the Wii straps), they have good games and you can buy both for the price of a PS3. Plus if you add in a little extra money you can get the HD DVD player for the 360. That to me is a much better value.
If I had an extra grand just sitting on the floor with nothing better to do and didn't care about Sony's policies then sure I'd prob pick one up. - At 2:29 PM, said...

"When there was a PS3 shortage, you dissed them for it,

1. there still isnt millions of units shipped
"Why can't you admit you couldn't resist buying an Xbox360 and now you relize in a year PS3 will beat the living **** out of it?"
2. in a year, hmm so 2 years after 360 is launch sonys system is suppose to beat the livin shit out of it, well ill bring up the point sony fanbois made about the orginal xbox which came out a few months after ps2, "of course its better they had 3 more months to put in better tech" - At 2:32 PM, said...
-
Yes, there are probably some in stock because 1) no one could find them and bought something else instead 2) buyers hoping to profit from ebay returned the units 3) more inventory is on the way. Even the head of Electronic Arts said that 40% of the units were being flipped on ebay. And when you do add up all the extra's (controller, HD-DVD, Wireless charger, wifi adaptor) you are in the same price range or more with XBox. You know all the gamers with XBOX have spent that already. Plus the Live membership. I think price is moot at this point.

sony is using their nextgen system to push its bluray tech on people, trying to make more money in the long run on movie sales. of course the fanboys cant see this, all they see is thanks sony for incudin all the bells and whistles we dont really need
1bluray, do we really need that much space, owait its not about the size bluray has better picture quality compared to dvd,< as told to me by a fanboy>
2wifi, do we need wifi for a gaming system thats not portable? im pretty sure most of us have wires all over our houses anyway shit my tivos got an ethernet cord runnin to it
3..someone said only the 20gig units are still on shelfs, is 40gigs worth 100$? im almost positive that every system that uses a hdd is able to use any random hdd as long as its formatted to the system in som way, and ive recently payed 80$ for a really nice 160gig drive
im pretty sure sonys had more then 1 problem in the past with new data formats, betamax? umd? anyone remember those dinosaurs - At 2:43 PM, said...
-
Why do you people keep pushing wi-fi as something that needs to be had with a console? Just because it's there doesn't mean it's better, and just because it's not there doesn't mean you need to get it. For all intents and purposes, unless you're lazy and oblivious to the disadvantages to wireless gaming, wi-fi isn't the way to go in most cases.
And also, many people are waiting for the next-gen format war to choose a winner before they go permanantely to hi-def, so at present, an HD format isn't too much of a selling point. - At 2:49 PM, said...

I was at a Best Buy in central PA the day before christmas and was dumbfounded to see six 60GB PS3's sitting on the shelf. I was very tempted to buy one, or buy several and resell them in the DC area (where I live), where the supply is notoriously bad. You can imagine my absolute shock when I left that aisle and saw a mountain of 60GB PS3's stacked nearby. 29 units in all. And here I had been thinking that they were sold out everywhere! Apparently PS3's and their $600 price tag are not very attractive in Central PA.

PS3 is overpriced, the game selection is uninspiring, and the technology is inferior to wii and 360 both. Also you're paying a premium for HD content, the only viable market for ps3s is people who own HDTVs...which isn't that great yet.
Wii is more accessable than PS3 for casual gamers and the 360 has superior hardware. Yes the PS3 has a more powerful processor but when you look at all the things it must do to make up for the other hardware shortcomings of the ps3 (lack of scaling chip for one example) its actually inferior to the 360. - At 3:14 PM, said...

Anecdote:
I was at a Best Buy last night, and there were PS3's in plain site. There were 2 or 3 being returned, so I asked the guy what the deal was. He said that they were unopened, and they've been getting a LOT (emphasis his) returns. - At 3:40 PM, said...

the reason no one buys PS3 is because everyone except fanboys realize that playing Resistance isnt worth $600.
Right now, each console has one game that is really worth buying. PS3=Resistance, Wii=Zelda and 360=Gears. PS3+Resistance=$660. 360+Gears=$460. Wii+zelda=$300. So for $100 more than PS3+Resistance, you can get both Gears, Zelda, 360 and Wii. People see the better value and they buy it. No matter how you twist it, PS3 is not a value. I know blu-ray standalones are $1000, but Sony makes a profit on the standalones. IF they sold every standalone at a $300 loss, they would cost $500. - At 4:00 PM, vixenk said...

The PS3 hasn't really brought a "hook" to the gaming table. The 360 offers a great online gaming experience, the Wii offers an innovative style of game play, and the PS3 offers... well, nothing that makes it stand out from the other consoles. Theres the whole pc/media center/Blu-Ray thing but at the end of the day that doesn't really matter to your average gamer/consumer. Someone that can afford the $600 it costs for the PS3 probably already has a PC and/or media center if they want them, not to mention the 360 makes a good media center itself at a lower price point, and Blu-Ray just isn't pushing enough demand right now for the average person to justify buying even a $600 Blu-Ray player.

I really hate those comments about how cheap it is for a bluray player. UGH! Who in the world would ever want one of those overpriced, proprietary, restrictive pieces of crap in the first place boggles the heck out of me. I have a Wii, and I am having a blast with it. I can't find any of the peripherals for it though (as expected).
Was in a Best Buy in Fairlawn, Ohio today and spotted a 60GB PS3 just sittin' there on the shelf. No one looked like they wanted it.
I intend to get a PS3 later on down the road though. I figure once the bugs are worked out and they get some quality games (along with lower prices) it might be worth buying.

This article is so idiotic. A child could draw a more accurate and insightful conclusion.
5 out of 7 PS3s at one store are unsold. How many PS3s have sold worldwide?
Since the author was too lazy to bother, here is the total number of PS3 sales according to one site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars#Current_system_sales_figures
There, you see? A MUCH better look at PS3 sales.
As for Anonymous at 11:54 AM -
Take an XBox 360, plus XBox Live ($100/year) and the add-on HD DVD drive. Assume a three year life of use: $300 for XBL alone, plus the console, plus tax, plus the HD DVD (Assume $100 for HD DVD) and you have about $700
People need to start seeing through the hype and paying real attention to the dollars, because the price differential between the PS3 and X360 are a LOT closer than any anti-ps3 hypeboi would dare write about. - At 5:50 PM, said...

the blue-ray player argument can be boiled down to this.
Does anybody play DVDs on their ps2?
Everybody I know who has a ps2 also owns a standalone DVD player, the simple reason is that the ps2 was a first generation device. Any and all blue-ray players being sold right now are also first generation devices.
Also important to note, 1 year from now, $700 will be an insane price to pay for any HD player.

I should also note about the price of the Xbox360
1) the hard-drive is optional, you can CHOOSE not to purchase it
2)Xbox Live is also optional, don't need it to play the game
3)HD-DVD drive: at the moment it's not terribly important to game developers, if it becomes so then it should be noted that you have a choice. Should it turn out that blue-ray becomes the dominant format, they can also release an optional blue-ray player, no such luck with the ps3 I'm afraid. - At 6:07 PM, said...

PS3 is over priced and overhyped. I won't buy it becase the lack of games plus the price ,$750 to $800 once you include a game $60, an HDMI cable which is another $60 on the Playstion website plus don't foget sales tax and you somewhere in that price range. Or for $50 more you get the WII60 speial which includes a Nintendo Wii, a Microsoft Xbox 360, as well as one game each. If you also want a next-generation HD-media player, for $1000, the same price as a stand-alone blu-ray player, you get the Wii60 special and the HD DVD player. Now which is a better deal, getting 2 game consoles and a game for each for a little more than a PS3,game and HDMI cable. And like I said, if you also want an HD-media player, you could get the HD DVD add-on for as much as a stand-alone blu-ray player. I'd go with the latter of the two.
- At 6:21 PM, said...

I've only seen them available in expensive bundles. I just want to buy the 60gb ver of the console, 1 extra controller, and 1 game. That should total to $750 or $800. All the bundles I've seen are $900-$1200 for 60gb. If the retailers would wise up and stop selling the overpriced bundles, maybe their sales would go up.

I know alot of people that want a ps3, but says the price is to high. now they are taking about getting a 360. well i have a 360 and got it in december05 and see alot of fanboys taking about after you buy the hd dvd, wifi, xbl, etc you've spent more that you would for a ps3. well i bought my 360 for the gameplay and 50 bucks a year for xbl is not a lot of money and for the other add ons i'll get it when i want to not when they want me to. as far as graphics the launch title on the 360 look just as good as the launch titles on ps3 take a look and compare them. also read http://dpad.gotfrag.com/portal/story/35372 for a comparison of the 360 and ps3. check out gamespot new game releases. the 360 more than double ps3 releases in 07. with exclusive titles coming to the 360 like virtua fighter 5, grand theft auto, and devil may cry just to name a few and with 360 exclusives (gears, halo3) why would you want to get a ps3. not unless you want a cheap blu ray player which is losing the war goto http://news.digitaltrends.com/talkback158.html call me want you want, but i'm getting the best value for my buck and the best system also.

Im just telling all of you guys that your all wrong! The PS3 is more expensive, but in the long run its going to be worth it! Sony isn't looking at the short end of things! They want to prove that in 2 years, 4 years and even 6 years from now that the PS3 isn't old news and that you will be telling yourself that your glad that you were able to experience true next generation on your PS3! Sony built this system with longterm ideals in mind! You guys are all being very harsh on sony because you expect sony to have come out with 2 million units at launch and have games looking like gears of war from the start! Give them a year or two before you say that they have failed! There not going to do any worse then the Gamecube did and Im going to tell you that! There PS2 is still out selling all three of the next gen systems! PS3 is built for long term instead of short term launch success! If your poor you eat at Subway, if your rich and want "QUALITY" you eat a Quiznos! Now...replace quiznos with PS3 and subway with Wii! There..do you get my point!

I'm not sure that anyone other than the IP owners of BR and HDDVD really give a damn about either BR or HDDVD as formats. (they're of course in it to protect profits, and "secure" their exclusive revenue stream)
Rapid growth in higher bandwidth distribution networks, and home mass-storage paced Moores law. 1Tb of storage passed under the $300 mark this Xmas - compared to $600 last year.
To me this makes online distribution a mainstream consumer proposition incredibly propable - within two years I don't see why I'd ever handle physical media again.
If I could switch to Netflix/Gamefly over online - I'd do it in a heartbeat. - At 9:05 AM, Unknown said...

Yeah, PS3s are not selling here either. Wii and Xbox360 are winning. Also, PS2s are selling since they are getting cheaper and have a few classic games everyone wants to play (Guitar Hero I&II, GTA, etc).
For those that say a PS3 is cheap because of Blue Ray, well, Blue Ray is getting it's ass kicked by HD-DVD. Go to you local Best Buy and check out the Blue-Ray vs HD-DVD sections. The HD-DVD section will be 3 times larger. People are well aware of the Betamax fiasco and won't jump into High Def DVD until there is a winner, and right now the leader isn't the format Sony ships with PS3. So it's silly to buy this over-hyped and over priced console for High Def DVD. - At 3:32 PM, said...

Me personally, I went with the ps3 because:
PS3 has bluray, and I have a nice theatre, so this will compliment...
PS3 supports linux
PS3 is region-free, so I can run japanese imports if I want
PS3 runs a sata drive, and they show you how to replace said sata drive... so i can upgrade my HD at a later time...
PS3 has HDMI hook ups, xbox360, and wii do not... I am sure you all know this, but hdmi stays digital, component means your picture is converted to analog... I have been on hdmi for 6 months, with a lot of my hardware and havent had a problem yet..
PS3 supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p... So those of us with better tv's/projectors can take advantage of better displays... xbox 360 supports 1080p, but again your signal is converted to analog so you lose something in the translation...
PS3 has a six axis controller, just like the wii.. so we may very well see games for the ps3 like we see with the wii(you turn the joystick, and it turns the car, etc).. Already see a couple of games that support this usage... I hear motorstorm will allow you to drive utilizing this as well...
I dont know where people are going with total cost of ownership.. I bought the 20GB model(I dont need a Digital camera card reader, 40GB more space, or wifi).. so I have $500 + 2 games ($120) plus an extra controller($50) + 6' hdmi cable($17 - if you are buying your hdmi cable from BestBuy you dont even deserve to own a console, period).... = $700 and no monthly gaming fees
xbox360 = $400 + 55(1 Gears of war game)+ $200 hddvd player + $20.00 (component cable.. dont you need an audio cable after this as well?!?!) + $40(extra controller) = $715 for 1 game, plus monthly fees to play online?!?!
I think we all see there is very little difference in the two..
As for my lower end unit... Ill upgrade my SATA HD later if I need to for a hell of a lot cheaper than $100.00.. I wouldnt be surprised if someone figures out how to plug a USB Network card into the ps3 and you have wifi.. Do I need to justify why the digital camera card reader crap isnt useful?
I like my ps3.. sure it might not have the titles xbox 360 has... YET... but they will come... - At 12:21 AM, said...

Well, that is not r5ealy a shocker because who likes a theif and a scammer? I sure don't. This is evident because I can confirm seeing at least one Playstation 3 while seeing not a single Nintendo wii. I even asked if it was a real PS3, and it was. This is absolute proof many do not like it, may it be the price, thne fanboism, or the lack of games, people do not really like the PS3.

Wii and PS3 are not even an option as far as i am concerned. I have about two dozen friends who have a 360 and play on xbox live regularly - and not one who has a PS3. And three more got a 360 this xmas. At least two have two or more 360s (used for media centers too).
I use my 360 as a media extender to connect to my central Vista Media Center DVR system in my home. This is a phenomenally powerful use of a 360 - worth the cost of the console for that one feature alone. In fact, I am hoping a price drop in 2007 will allow me to buy a 360 to use as an extender in my exercise room as well as one of my guest bedrooms.
HD format? I could really care less. I got the HDDVD plaver for my 360 and will watch any movies I can in that format, but frankly regular DVD gets the job done and BR doesnt have as many titles at this point.
The point about HD cable format doesnt concern me at all. Like any decent home theater setup, I have a HD switching A/V reciever that supports HDMI, DVI, and Component in/out for all sources. So the 360 pumps component HD + digital audio to the reciever, and the TV connects with a single HDMI. Not that it even cares about the audio signal - TV speakers are muted.
Game support - For nearly two years now the 360 has had great games... with the original PGR3, COD2 and GRAW, to the recent releases of GOW, Rainbow 6 Vegas, COD3 and others, to the upcoming Halo3, GRAW2, and Assassin's Creed. Even the XBox Live Arcade titles can be pretty fun. I have had a lot of fun with Poker, UNO, Zuma, and RoboBlitz. Even those cheezy Burger King games are worth the $3 they cost! - At 4:58 PM, said...

It’s just the start for PS3...
All the negative comments I read about are all about the same thing
1. Price
New technology cost money, so if you want it you got to pay for it as, development is not cheap and business need to make money. In time as the technology to produce the components improve and become more efficient, like everything else new to the electronic industry, the cost will come down.
2 If you are not bothered about new technogly and don’t care about the advancements in things like blu-ray and HD then stay behind and stop moaning.
3 Yeah not much in new titles, but the developers are learning to programme for it, so this will improve.
4 PS3 Sales may be slow because of the delays to market, people may have invested in Xbox 360s already, and possibly can’t afford both. Perhaps people want to wait to see if it lives up to the expectations, but Sony have attempted to generate the “next generation” of console, and not just "pimped my console", “ibox 360”. Or as it should be called as there is nothing creative or inmagitive in using a Apple processing chip already in peoples desktop PC and laptops to power their next generation console. The chip was not designed specifically for gaming.
In summary the Xbox 360 is good and may be better than the ps3 now but Xbox have had a year head start, where will the ps3 be in a year’s time, and have we already seen the Xbox peak, can it offer more than games like gears of war?? - At 12:29 AM, said...

Anyone who compares "Six Axis" to the Wii's motion sensing capibilites is just an idiot. Six Axis is a joke.
