Are Plasma Televisions on the way out?
Tuesday

Plasma televisions have been dominating the 40 inch and up HDTV market for years. This domination has been due to the fact that LCD flat panel televisions have not been able to reach the 40 inch size economically. However the Plasma television' s future may be in jeopardy due to technological advances in LCD flat panels. LCD flat are beginning to reach larger and larger sizes and typically have a higher resolution than Plasma televisions. According to MSNBC "It is technologically difficult and often costly for plasma makers to give a full high-definition function to models with a screen size of less than 50 inches, while LCD TV makers are aggressively promoting full HD models in that segment although prices are generally higher." "This Christmas season probably is the last chance for (plasma TV makers) to promote 42-inch models. By this time next year probably there will be no price difference between plasma and LCD TVs," Credit Suisse analyst Wanli Wang said.
Television sales numbers are also reflecting the advancing LCD technology. According to digitimes.com "PDP (plasma display panel) TV sales declined for the first time in October in Japan, according to a survey by Japan's Business Computer News (BCN). Sales value of PDP TVs in Japan dropped 1.9% on year in October, the research firm added. Last November, PDP TVs accounted for 97.3% of the large-size flat-panel TV market in Japan but the share of the segment dropped to 67.1% in November 2006, said the BCN. Meanwhile, LCD TV share grew rapidly to 32.9% over one year, added the research firm.
The LCD vs Plasma war will be raging for some time to come.
