"Gameplay" more important than "high tech features"

With all three next gen consoles on the market now we can finally see how each is fairing in the minds of gamers.

Each console has a specific philosophy of what will attract your next gen dollars. Which company is correct? What really attracts gamers? Is it all these new high tech features? Is it as simple as great and fun gameplay? Price maybe?

Now that Decembers sales data has been tallied lets take a look and see which console faired the best.

NPD North America holiday sales data (November - December 25):
  1. Xbox 360 = 2,000,000
  2. Nintendo Wii = 1,800,000
  3. Playstation 3 = 750,000
The Xbox 360 made a strong showing as expected due to great games and strong supply. However, the real surprise is that the Wii nearly took top honors with limited supply. Just imagine if everyone looking for a Wii could have found one. Wii sales would have been off the charts. The PS3 on the other hand looks to have come up very short with just 750,000 units sold.

Looking at the sales data above and the console features listed below it appears gamers are placing more importance on the unique gameplay of the wii rather that on the high tech features of the other two consoles. Yes the Xbox 360 sold the most but if the Wii supply could have met demand it would have easily taken top honors. As far as the Playstation 3 is concerned initial supply was very short but rebounded in December. Reports are appearing all over the web of Playstation 3 consoles sitting unsold at major retailers.

The numbers do not lie folks.

General console features:
  1. Playstation 3 = high definition games, blue ray, cell processor, rsx advanced gpu, $600
  2. Xbox 360 = high definition games, xbox live, standard dvd, triple core processor, advanced gpu, $400
  3. Nintendo Wii = non high definition games, no movie playback, unique controller, standard dvd, ibm broadway (weakest cpu of next gen consoles), ati hollywood (weakest gpu of next gen consoles), virtual console, $250
