Phil Harrison: PS3 Demand Is Unprecedented

Apparently PS3's are still flying off the store shelves according to Sony.

Here's the latest quote from Sony's spin machine...

"Talk to the people who run GameStop, talk to the people who run BestBuy, and they'll tell you that the demand is unprecedented and that they give us kudos for managing to keep a very sophisticated supply chain moving."

I guess that stack of PS3's sitting in Best Buy every time I go there is a new and hot off the press stack.

Go figure this one out. Hmm

Why Does It Take Microsoft Over 6 Weeks To Send A Mailer For An XBOX?

Poor guy. A blogger calling himself Saruman has been waiting for Microsoft to ship him a box for his broken XBox for 6 weeks. Just the box. So he can mail it in for repair. 6 weeks. They still haven't mailed it. Did we mention its been 6 weeks?

From his blog:

" ... another week goes by (4 weeks).

I call up on a Sunday and get someone that could actually speak and he told me that there is definitely a problem with this order and it is totally screwed up and all of the previous guys were lying just to hang up the phone with me (gee thanks earlier guys!). This guy was easily the most helpful and told me to call back tomorrow when the supervisors are in and they will be able to help me. I call up on Monday and the supervisor is not available but takes my information in order to call me back. ...

another week goes by (5 weeks)."

Wii stomping the competition - thousands of geeks exclaim, "told you so!"

News report from Yahoo. The Nintendo Wii is outselling both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, according to new statistics. Nintendo sold 436,000 Wiis during January 2006, beating out the second place PS2 and the third place Xbox 360.

"Nintendo has maintained its lead primarily through ease-of-use, a lower price, and strong game titles at launch time, analysts have said. Sony and Microsoft, in contrast, have tried to develop consoles that are cutting edge, which has increased the price of the units."

The problem is that they have only managed to sell through around 1.88 million. Even taking into account the massive European launch this still leaves around half of all units unsold. Is Sony in trouble?

Editorial : Is the Wii Virtual Console getting more credit than it deserves?

Let me start off by saying I do in fact own a Wii and love it. I truly believe that Nintendo is doing some innovative things that deserve accolades, however; Virtual Console is not one of them.

What brought me to this is today's release of The Legend of Zelda : The Ocarina of Time for $10 USD. The general Internet buzz is a cheer to the heralds of Nintendo, but am I the only one who has a problem paying $10 for a game that Nintendo gave away for free (in one form or another) a mere 4 years ago. The fact that if you still have this disc it will play on the Wii only makes the situation worse.

Again, I still love Nintendo, but they are getting the praise of downloadable content done right when compared to other console makers. I just feel that considering the depth of their library and the other libraries they have added, there should have been like 100 to 200 games to buy from day one, and not this slow trickle that has you shelling out $5 dollars or more per week. Now that would have been downloadable content done right.

This is but one man's opinion, so feel free to share yours @ The HDGN Forums

PS3 is proof positive: bad things happen when gaming isn't the focus

With the PS3, Sony has let its video entertainment aspirations dictate the design of a gaming console, and the results are now plain for us to see: when the going gets rough, the gaming functionality gets going (going, gone!) out of the box. Buh-bye.

Sure, now Sony will use software to provide some backwards compatibility, but not full compatibility. They've got a stop-gap measure in place, and we're hoping that it works really well because who wants to keep an old PS2 sitting around once you have a PS3?

  • Auction House gives both car tuning experts and adept livery painters purpose as they can now build up in-game wealth through selling their masterpieces online.
  • The ability to hide car setups online turns tuning into a hot commodity
  • The ability to lock paintjobs to their respective cars makes these customized cars truly one-of-a-kind.
  • Every vehicle comes with exhaustive car history data, including total distance and time driven, total winnings, total cost of repairs, number of races, number of owners, number of times sold, and more.
  • Every vehicle sold will also come with all its extra (and stock) parts in the trunk.

Modded NES and SNES Controllers work with the Wii, wirelessly

Mark's wireless NES controller mod for Wii involves opening up a SNES and NES controller, sticking a wireless transmitter, a microcontroller, and an iPod mini battery inside, and constructing a wireless receiver module with a GameCube cable on the end.

Thanks to some sort of black magic -- Mark refers to it as "coding" -- when all this is put together, an off-the-shelf Wii can interpret the control input from the modded controllers, and the nostalgia-fueled gamer can play classic games on their virtual console without worrying about wires, and without a Wiimote-tethered Classic controller.

Recent "Xbox 360 Core" price cut was an error. Or was it?

It has been widely reported this week on the internet that the UK game retailer Play.com dropped the price of the Xbox 360 Core System a whopping 25% (£149.99) making it cheaper than the Nintendo Wii priced at £179.99. Sorry to tell you this folks but it appears the price has returned to the original £199.99.

See the product page here.

Was this simple human error? Was it a case of a retailer jumping the gun and posting a "yet to be officially announced" price cut too early?

If the latter is the case this could be another indication that the Zephyr (the rumored black 360) is on the way. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

PS3s still being returned? Wii starting to trickle in? Xbox 360 sales surging?

It is no secret that the Playstation 3 has had a bumpy ride thus far into the systems life cycle. Whether it be slow initial hardware sales due to low inventory or simply being outshined by the Xbox 360 on 3rd party games due to lack of online features or sub par graphics. The PS3 has received its fair share of bad press and set backs. Retailers are still reporting that Playstations are being returned from Ebay hopefuls not able to sell the pricey machines.

In a call to my local Gamestop today I was able to confirm that they are indeed still receiving PS3s back whether it be by way of "return" or "trade-ins".

I also asked about this past holidays "golden boy", the Nintendo Wii and was able to confirm that indeed 2 units were traded in today as well.

Before ending the call I asked how the return rate of the PS3 and Wii compares to the Xbox 360. I was told that the Xbox 360 return rate was nearly zero, not counting the red ringed D.O.A. consoles. (which are few and far between now)

On another positive note for Xbox 360, NPD numbers for the month of January are reporting a surge in Xbox 360 sales with numbers 18% higher (294,000 units) than 1 year earlier when Microsoft had no "next gen" competition.

Is the 360 getting a second wind? Is interest for the Playstation 3 and Wii currently on the decline in the absence of many compelling games? Only time will tell.

Sony grants Free Playstation 3s to fans

Last night we reported that Dwyane Wade, of the Miami Heat, received a free Playstation 3 after winning the Playstation Skills Competition. (See the article here.)

Apparently Dwade was not the only person to receive a free PS3 but a whole section of arena spectators. The way the giveaway worked was each competitor in the Playstation Skills Competition was assigned a section of the arena. If said competitor won the competition then every spectator sitting in that section got a free Playstation 3. The exact number of recipients is not known, however one thing is for sure it was a fairly large number.

Nintendo Wii having problems with 480p output?

A thread over at the Nintendo of America forums has highlighted a potential problem with the Nintendo Wii's output of 480p signals using component cables. Over a dozen members have reported blank and flickering screens on a range of televisions from 30" Toshiba CRTs right up to 65" Sony XBR LCD TVs.

The type of cable isn't limited to third party solutions from the likes of Mad Catz, Psyclone, and Joytech either: several reports indicate that the standard Nintendo component cable also exhibits the problem (no word on whether DIY will save you). Strangely, the problem -- which Tharealfofo states is "like nothing is connected" -- occurs in similar sections of certain games and applications: several forum members have mentioned that the screen goes blank during specific sections of Zelda, the Wii Channel, and in the Opera browser. Switching to 480i output in nearly all cases fixes the problem.

Nintendo hides Wii’s HD?

Apparently, The Inquirer (keep that in mind) is reporting that a drunk Nintendo executive revealed to them that the Wii’s GPU is capable of HD. If true, the revelation shouldn’t be so much of a surprise, given that even the original Xbox, which the Wii is more powerful than, could support basic high definition.

While the Wii might be capable of HD, the fact remains that developing in HD costs more for developers, and since the Wii wasn’t designed with HD as a main selling point, it generally can’t push HD graphics while maintaining a decent framerate.
