Crysis 32 Vs. 64 bit - The Real Story?
YouGamers: "One thing that can't be denied about Crytek's demo of Crysis is that it's very newsworthy! A sharp eyed forum regular (cheers UTGeneral!) noticed that Legion Hardware had posted a brief comparison between how well Crysis runs in 32 bit and 64 bit modes. Their conclusion was that 64 bit was quite a bit better. Well that piqued my curiosity, so we gave it a bash too! Hmm, the results are... different..."

Strategy Informer gives The Witcher 7.7/10
RPGs have become the staple diet of any and all PC based games, it seems. Because of the proliferous, almost viral nature of this over-explored genre, its becoming increasingly difficult to find one that offers something new. The Witcher, however, is one of them, though it offers it amidst a sea of familiarity.

Sony repositions PS2 to better tackle Wii
Tech writes: "We've known for a while about the 'Ceramic White' version of the PlayStation 2 Sony is planning to ship soon, but we finally have word of a US release date and details of a special bundle that brings the console more in line with Nintendo's family-oriented offerings."
"Sony clearly hopes the package will encourage younger gamers and families to gather round the console for an evening of karaoke in the same way Nintendo has had success with its everybody-in approach to gaming on the Wii. Given the low price of the older PlayStation, its massive library of games (1,500, with 160 new titles imminent) and its ability to play DVDs and CDs, it's not surprising that Sony should seek to reposition the console as a more fun alternative to the hardcore action of the PS3."

Iron Man game designers using ILM model
The Iron Man video game has two strikes against it, by merit of being (1) a licensed product and (2) poised to be released alongside a movie. However, there are some benefits to the movie connection. Speaking to USA Today, Sega of America Senior Producer Mike McHale revealed that they had received the CG model for Iron Man himself created by Industrial Light & Magic for use in the film.

Clive Barker's Jericho Review by GameSpot
Clive Barker's Jericho is an inconsistent first-person shooter, alternating between moments of pure, atmospheric greatness and irritating design paradoxes that suck the fun out of the gameplay. For every incredible set piece--a battle in a Roman gladiator arena, fearful attacks by ghostly children--there is a frustrating sequence that puts every shortcoming in the game proudly on display. There's a lot going on, and sometimes it comes together exquisitely. More often, Jericho's various elements get in the way of one another, creating a game you'll love one moment and hate the next.

Joystiq: What features should MS spring for the Fall Update?
Although IPTV screens are "unrelated" to the Xbox 360's Fall Update, they are all that is known about the last of this year's major 360 updates. Last year's Fall Update included 1080p support, HD DVD functionality, XNA functionality, WMV compatibility, and more. Some pretty big-ticket items in there, to be sure. And there's been two Spring Updates ('06 and '07), both of which came with some huge improvements including background downloading and chat and IM functionality.
Just two days before the one-year anniversary of the Fall Update, Joystiq would like to ask you gamers, what you would expect to see in this year's Fall Update? There's been rumors of DivX video support, an XBLA blade, and integrated clan functionality. Surely there's more up the sleeve of Redmond's oversized fall-themed sweater. What do you readers want to see in your Fall Update?

The Witcher Review - 8.5/10
In this review, IGN reports:
"The Witcher really is a good game and one that PC RPG fans will surely enjoy. It combines some entertaining and fast-paced combat with a well realized world and pretty decent story that branches and can end in three different fashions. With a load of choice in character creation on a point assignment and morality level, theres plenty of reason to want to come back and play the 40-50 hour game again. The big problems mainly sit with the technical issues like crash bugs and long load times can be very frustrating. If it wasn't for those things The Witcher would have scored better here. If you can look past the technical side of things (which are still not as bad as some other RPGs released recently) The Witcher is definitely a game youll remember well over the years."

PALGN Gives 9/10 To Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
When PALGN heard Beyond the Sword was going to be the biggest expansion to Civilization ever they were a little skeptical, but make no mistake about it, they have crammed so many new features and strategy options here that it definitely holds that claim to truth. There are the inevitable issues including specific tweaking, and the presentation is basically the same, but Beyond the Sword offers so much new that it could be considered a sequel, and expands the Civilization IV universe in such a way that it will keep fans of the original game busy for an extremely long time.

Console Monster Gives 91% To Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank not only plays great, but it looks great too. The title steers towards the cartoon look and feel, but the fact that its on the PS3 means that everything is slightly more detailed, and extremely smooth. Although on the surface the graphics may look simple, if you stop and pay close attention, gamers will notice that actually its really quite intricate, with plenty of detail going into the characters and the environments. And in high-definition, the bright and colourful world is a joy to behold.
Ratchet and Clank has a superb weapon selection, a humorous story and characters, and intuitive game play elements. Ratchet & Clank is a great 3D platform title, with plenty to do for all ages.

IGN: Exit review - You won't want to escape this intriguing XBLA title
Mr. ESC steps onto the scene of a metropolitan disaster dressed in black, with fedora screwed on tight, red scarf flapping in the wind. Only he can save the citizens trapped in various buildings around the city. Fire, water, and electrical shorts won't stop him from finding the whining victims trapped in each building and then leading them to the exit. This task is rarely easy and will require you to use your noggin in ways unusual for an Xbox Live Arcade title. Released on PSP well over a year ago, Taito's Exit makes its way to Xbox Live Arcade. The perfect type of game to port, Exit is an inventive title with a slick style and brain-scratching puzzles. Many will find the unique set-up refreshing, but it's a few old-school game mechanics that keep Exit from reaching the upper echelon of XBLA titles.
Overall score: 7.6/10

Capcom apologizes for Monster Hunter platform switch
The latest issue of Famitsu features an interview with the Monster Hunter team. Many PS3 fans were angered when the company made a surprising platform change for the upcoming Monster Hunter 3. The PS3 version of the game was canceled and became a Wii exclusive.
According to Famitsu, representatives of Capcom had a "big apology" for PS3 fans. "Famitsu pointed out that some people may have purchased a PS3 once Monster Hunter 3 was announced last year. This drew a big apology from the Capcom reps, who said that PS3 owners should wait for further announcements in the series."
Capcom is supposedly increasing their focus on PS3 development, but no significant projects have been announced for PS3 yet. A PS3 port of Lost Planet was recently revealed at its Gamers Day. If Capcom's asking PS3 owners to "wait" for another MH-related announcement, many Sony fans are going to be quite disappointed.

Casual games a 2.25 billion market, says report
The casual game industry is a USD 2.25 billion a year market, currently growing by 20 per cent annually, according to the 2007 market report released by the Casual Games Association.
Among other things, the report found that men made up 48.3 per cent of casual gamers, although women accounted for 74 per cent of paying casual game players. Those paying consumers average 7 to 15 hours of online play per week, primarily between the hours of 7 and 9pm, or between 11am and 2pm.
"The Casual Games Report offers some of the most interesting insight ever on the industry," said Jessica Tams, managing director of the Casual Games Association.
"Already more people play casual games than any other type of video game and the industry continues to grow at a very healthy rate."
The report also found that casual games were usually played for a short period of time, from 5 to 20 minutes, although it was common for people to have played one game after another for many hours.

Guitar Hero III gets offline mode with patch on 360
Those who fired up their new copies of Guitar Hero III yesterday might have been disheartened to find that the game lacked the offline co-op quickplay mode. Luckily (for a portion of you, at least) that's going to be addressed with a quickness, thanks to a patch that 1UP says is coming this Tuesday to Xbox Live.
The bad news is that there's no word of similar treatment on the Wii or PS3 versions so far, but hopefully it's not too far off. We're not sure what's so difficult about offline co-op quickplay that it had to be addressed with a patch, but we're happy that Activision seems concerned enough about it to act on it so quickly. Of course, that's not much comfort to those without internet or (we're looking at you new Arcade owners) a hard drive to save the patch on.

The film is adapted from the 1960s Japanese animated series and will be directed by the Wachowski brothers (i.e., The Matrix trilogy, V for Vendetta.) The film will star Emile Hirsch (The Girl Next Door) as Speed, Christina Ricci as Trixie, John Goodman and Susan Sarandon as Speed's parents, Matthew Fox as Racer X, and the Korean pop singer Rain as Taejo.
The Wii and DS versions of Speed Racer will be available when the film comes out on May 8, 2008. The PS2 version will be available when the DVD is released.

Creed is Good
The hype is warranted. From their time with Assassin's Creed, Screen Play would not be surprised if it is game of the year. They spent a gripping day last week playing the game and chatting to effervescent Creative Director, Patrice Desilets.
Patrice says there are two elements to Assassin's Creed - the formal missions and "the toy".
When Screen Play finally grabbed the joypad, they could instantly understand what Patrice was talking about. Whether leaping across rooftops, scaling the heights, swan diving from towers or just annoying innocents by barging into them, knocking over their market stalls and causing them to drop items like pots, Assassin's Creed is enormous fun to just tool around with.

Galactic annihilation could be an emotional experience
Saving the galaxy from annihilation has to be emotional, according to a Canadian video game developer who wants players of action role playing title Mass Effect to weigh their choices carefully as they fight for the future.
BioWare Corp, the Canadian game house being bought by Electronic Arts, is giving players a big swath of outer space to explore and defend with its upcoming Xbox 360 title.
But with some of the most realistic and best looking digital actors available in any video game to date, BioWare is also out to prove it can make players feel passionately about the characters in the story.

China has modded Wii's that can even get firmware updates online, mod Xbox 360 chips that can be switched on or off so that it toggles between a modded console and an unmodded one to go on Live, and the whole set of pirated DS library that is available for perhaps US$12.

Driving the boundaries of realism
Driving through the rain-drenched streets of Shanghai in an Aston Martin DB4 at breakneck speeds, with the neon signs of shops blurring as you pass by, is one of the great thrills in life - even if it is only virtual.
Video game development has made tremendous graphical strides in the last four decades and nowhere is this more pronounced than in driving simulations.
Games such as Project Gotham Racing 4, Ferrari Challenge and Gran Turismo 5 offer photo-real cars with simulated handling physics, being thrown about in high-definition worlds, which often recreate real cities in astonishing detail.

The Witcher gets 87/100 from YouGamers
So, what to make of The Witcher? On face value, it's just another action fantasy RPG, albeit with lots of nice touches. There are plenty of annoying aspects (the endless cutscenes, dodgy dialogue and simplistic combat) and it's not completely free-roaming. The sex mini-game could be seen as crass, the language unnecessary and the setting confusing (talk of genetics and mutants in a medieval land?).
However, try to think of The Witcher as being like Winona Ryder: oh-so pretty, very talented but somewhat of a shop-lifting, flawed gem. This is what makes it so good: the pros completely outweigh the cons, even after the teeth-grindingly awful start. It has plenty of length to it, perhaps not to Oblivion or Baldur's Gate levels, but certainly enough; it questions morality by forcing you to make decisions that often have no "right" answer. The levels of difficulty change the gameplay enough to warrant multiple replays too. Underneath its gutter-level exterior, there lies a remarkably thoughtful game.

IGN's Guitar Hero 3 review - Another jam fest you don't want to miss
Guitar Hero 3 is a safe first entry into the franchise by Neversoft. The studio didn't rock the boat too much and stuck with the tried and true formula of previous Guitar Hero games in most situations. The soundtrack is fantastic and the new online additions are going to take the Guitar Hero community to the next level. It really is hard to argue with any facet of the gameplay. Everything outside of the game itself, though, is in need of an overhaul as the presentation is growing a bit stale. It's hard to ask that of a developer's first foray into an established franchise, but it's equally hard to look at the game and not see room for improvement.
Overall score: 8.9/10

BioWare & Pandemic: The Fatted Calves?
The Escapist reveals the juicy details of the Electronic Arts-BioWare/Pandemic deal:
The acquisition of BioWare/Pandemic studios by the nefarious Electronic Arts (EA) has been much discussed by analysts and industry observers, bloggers and forum posters. What has not been discussed is how this deal came to pass, who benefits and why EA dumped more than three-quarters of a billion dollars on a premier developer. This deal's story pretty much begins and ends with John Riccitiello and a three-and-a-half year game of executive musical chairs.
1997-2004: Riccitiello was President and Chief Operating Officer of EA.
2004: Riccitiello suddenly left EA to co-found the private equity firm Elevation Partners. At the time, the succession plan for EA CEO was already in work, and Riccitiello was in running to succeed Larry Probst as the next EA CEO.
November 2005: Elevation Partners invested US$300 million to merge BioWare and Pandemic Studios under a new managing company, VG Holdings. Riccitiello became the CEO of VG Holdings.
February 2007: Riccitiello rejoined EA as the new CEO. He relinquished his roles as Managing Director of Elevation Partners and CEO of VG Holdings. Greg Richardson (a former EA general manager) became the new CEO of VG Holdings.
October 2007: EA acquired BioWare and Pandemic Studios from Elevation Partners - at a record US$860 million including US$620 million in cash. EA disclosed that Riccitiello stood to individually make $4.9 million on the deal. Riccitiello abstained from the EA board's vote on the buyout, though he highly endorsed it.
The Escapist offers more exposé and insight into what the story calls an "incestuous" deal.

Electronic Arts has become known for the amount of downloadable content they've tossed on Xbox Live, most infamously charging for what were essentially cheat codes in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007. Thankfully, however, that won't be the approach for their Tony Hawk rival, Skate.

HDMI vs. Component - What's The Difference?
Amid a global spectrum of high definition format battles, none is so misunderstood as the debate between HDMI and component video. Some videophiles expect HDMI to completely outpace the "vintage" analog format, while true experts in the field know there are distinct advantages and disadvantages to each format. This article will give you a better idea of the technologies that make up these video formats, and prove that the differences are not as lopsided as you may think.
If you talk to any half-witted video enthusiast or ask an associate at your local big box retailer - bearing in mind that the two groups are pretty much the same - they'll unmistakably tell you that HDMI is better than component, case closed, end of story. This is just based on tired assumptions of the entire audio/visual industry.

Guitar Hero III's wireless guitar battery pack costs you more moolah
For all the innovation that the "new-gen" of consoles have brought us, there's one thing that will apparently never change: ridiculously over-priced accessories. Giving the wireless Guitar Hero III controller a feature it should have had from the get go is the $19.99 single recharge kit, which removes the need to use and dispose of single-use batteries. This continues on from the precedent that Microsoft set with its wireless controller, which only comes bundled with a case to stick a couple of AA batteries inside. You can grudgingly pick up this necessary but over-priced accessory on October 31st from Red Octane's store.

Real-Life Video Game Horror Stories
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. We were home aloneas we always arewith only our Xbox 360 to keep us company. We were practically ankle-deep in Covenant corpses and were about to jump online to dazzle some noobs when suddenly we heard a tap-tap-tapping at our window.
It wasn't a woman paying a late-night visit. It wasn't a raven. And it wasn't a monkey's paw. Or Freddy "I'm Your Boyfriend Now Nancy" Krueger.
But it was these six tales of ultimate video-game terror, all of which are guaranteed to DualShock the pants off you. Read on...if you dare.

Ratchet and Clank F:ToD; Grab all 32 Gold Bolts Videos
Games Radar: "After months of anticipation, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction has finally hit the PS3, and it's... easy. Almost too easy. Even by the standards of the series. But as seasoned Ratchet fans know, playing a Ratchet game is about much more than just blasting your way straight through its storylin, and this shooty-jumpy powerhouse is no exception.
Ratchet & Clank Future is packed to the gills with hidden nooks, crannies and incentives to explore them, not the leaset of which are the Gold Bolts. There are 32 of these huge, glittering prizes scattered throughout the game's 18 levels; some are easy to find, and others stay maddeningly hidden even after you get the "Treasure Mapper" device near the end of the game. Whichever ones you're having trouble with, though, we're here to help - just click the tab at left with the name of the level you'd like to focus on, and our videos will show you exactly where to go to claim your prize".
More videos after the jump.

If Lightning Strikes, Drop the PlayStation And Pick Up a Book
Chris Bergin and his brother, Ben, were jamming along to "Message in a Bottle" on the videogame Guitar Hero 2 during a storm in June when a bright light flashed and a thunderclap shook their house in Wilton, Conn.
The lightning strike nearby triggered a power surge that snaked through the house's electrical system to Mr. Bergin's PlayStation 2 then traveled through the wiring to the plastic guitar controller pressed up against his stomach.
With the spread of high-tech devices, including laptops and videogames, means there are new ways in which people can suffer injuries or property losses, even in the relative safety of their homes. A division of Sony Corp., Sony Computer Entertainment America, the maker of PlayStation products, says it hadn't heard of incidents like this and says its devices come with safety instructions about lightning. Activision Inc., which makes the Guitar Hero game, advocates staying off electronics during storms.

Destructoid review: Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure 9/10
Zack and Wiki is an absolute blast. Through a combination of normal puzzles -- though admittedly, "normal" is a bit of a misnomer in a game where people use their flying, magical monkey friend to transform deadly enemies into useful items -- and incredibly rewarding motion control scenarios, Zack and Wiki feels like something totally familiar, yet incredibly new and original. Yeah, a couple of the Wiimote-reliant bits don't work very well and the gameplay kind of slumps in the middle, but these problems are relatively minor in the face of the sheer gameplay glee Zack and Wiki has to offer. It's the best game available on the system today, and one of the best and most innovative adventure games ever made.
Don't let this become a cult classic, never to be sequelized. Consumers desperately need more games like Zack and Wiki on the Wii.
Buy it. Right now.

Movies use MMORPG characters as 'actors'
For the past few months, New York-based programmer A.J. Loiacono and his buddies have been logging onto the popular online sword-and-sorcery game "World of Warcraft" a little more often than usual.
But they're not visiting the mythical realm of Azeroth to goof around and fight the game's virtual dragons like the rest of the game's 9 million subscribers. They've got work to do, you see. They're making a movie.
Using a high-end Mac to record the action, Loiacono's buddies log on from their computers and control their game-character avatars to act out scenes from the team's original script, a sci-fi comedy thing about a guy who travels through time to save his people. The film, still in production, is set for an online-only release next spring

GameSpot gives 5.5/10 to SWAT: Target Liberty
If you ever imagined that being a SWAT officer is an exciting and rewarding profession, Target Liberty will feed you a healthy dose of reality. In this stealth/action game's world, people can't move faster than a brisk walk, civilians must often be beat on the head to comply, and the Department of Homeland Security is willing to let a team of three local boys deal with nuke-wielding terrorists on their own.
There are quite a few ridiculous elements at play in Target Liberty, and the ensuing action usually boils down to repeating the same basic tasks over and over again. Yet in spite of the occasional tedium and dreary, late-blooming storyline, Target Liberty has its enjoyable moments. It just needed a lot more of them.
SWAT: Target Liberty is a generic shooter that is neither tactical nor especially action-packed. It tries to toe the line between stealth and gunplay, but fails to succeed at either. You can squeeze some fun out of it, but you won't remember anything about it the following day.

Yahoo Games reviews Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction- 4.5/5
When ace Sony developer Insomniac released the shooter Resistance: Fall of Man as their debut PS3 title, Yahoo games editors were a little disappointed. Not because Resistance wasn't good - their 4.5/5 score argues that it was great - but because they really wanted to see Insomniac's classic platforming series Ratchet and Clank powered by the PS3.
After slightly less than a year-long wait, they've got our wish. The title of this episode (Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, continuing a general gaming trend that suggests game names might soon be at least a paragraph long) is the only awkward thing about this otherwise supremely polished, playable and fun game.

3. Mario Party 8: 2.9 million
4. Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree: 1.8 million

Sony PlayStation Eye and Eye of Judgment Review by PC World 4/5
If gamers are into collectible card games, several hundred dollars for a PlayStation 3 and another additional cost for the game and Eye hardware make Eye of Judgment the most expensive card game in history. On the other hand, PC Gamer can't say they have ever enjoyed a collectible card game as much, if only for the inexplicable satisfaction derived from watching your TV screen respond in elaborate detail to basic physical gestures with fluid animations and flashy explosions and plenty of cheesy, booming fantasy voiceovers.

"The graphics are on par with the PC version, though we did notice a few, isolated instances of frame rate chop, despite the fact that there's nothing in here that should be taxing the 360 hardware for that to occur. The environments might not always be rich with detail, but Lara looks consistently great. It's also a really great-sounding game."

Assassin's Creed Rumors about PS3 put to rest. It runs great.
NZGamer: On the internet there have been huge dramas over a comment during an interview you made regarding technical issues on the 360 and PS3. Want to clear that up for us?
Patrice: (Laughs) Well, I wasn't supposed to answer that question the first time. Basically my role isn't the technical side of the game but I was asked what were the biggest challenges we faced... Maybe, also, it was my English as I'm not very good with my tenses. I mean, the game is almost gold, so it'll be on DVD on the 360, everything which needed to be figured out for the PS3. We didn't cut anything, it's all there.
Another thing, when I did that interview, it was in September, there was an embargo, and they couldn't print it for another three weeks. So the problems were being reported when it wasn't the case. The game will be out on time, on both platforms, and everything is fine. There really is no issue!

SOCOM Tactical Strike PSP: Easy contender for Game of the Year on any platform.
PSPFanboy tends not to get to worked up about the PSP games and sometimes is pretty harsh...not so with the new SOCOM.
Quote:
Tactical Strike delivers on so many levels, and is easily on its way to becoming more than just PSP Game of the Year. No, the sheer quality of this title makes it an easy contender for Game of the Year on any platform. The technical excellence is absolutely astounding. Graphics like these simply shouldn't be possible on the PSP, as it easily bests most of the PS2 library. If you thought Logan's Shadow of Chains of Olympus looked good, you haven't seen Tactical Strike. Textures are incredible, especially for a PSP game. The character models are well detailed, and feature incredibly detailed animations. Then, you add real time lighting, fantastic volumetric smoke effects, and large, expansive, detailed environments that must be seen to be believed. Just wait until you see the streaks of sunlight pour through the jungle flora above you. On the PSP screen, or connected to a TV, this game looks absolutely incredible. These screenshots just don't do the game justice: it must be seen to be believed.
The gameplay is absolutely engrossing -- maybe too much so (we've missed a couple of subway stops thanks to this game). There's a significant learning curve, but the built-in tutorial does a fantastic job of teaching players the basics in an intuitive way. Players control two squads of two soldiers, and must use their tactical knowledge to complete their objectives. Players never take direct control of the soldiers: don't expect this to play like previous SOCOM games. In fact, each soldier has its own AI and will try to take care of themselves -- you merely provide the directives and suggestions that they must try to follow. Careful positioning and timing is vital to success, as it only takes a second or two to see the results of your actions. Smart players will remain stealthy, killing enemies as quietly as possible. When gunfire needs to be used, players will know how to set up Alpha and Bravo fireteams to fire from opposing angles, to take enemies by surprise. Enemies will die in a few bullets ... but so will your soldiers.
The incredible realism of the game makes it so utterly compelling. Don't expect to run and gun your way through levels. Enemies will intelligently respond to the changing environment and will do an incredible job of trying to flank you and hide behind cover. They will call for reinforcements, be cautious when someone is mysteriously killed, and will even use snipers to try and get rid of you. This is a brutally difficult game, where no man can be "left behind." To tackle such overwhelming odds, you will find that you will start thinking in totally new ways ... and the game will always try to counter your tactics. It's a brilliant game of chess, but faster and far deadlier.
