The End of Blu-ray Vs. HD DVD War Cometh January 15, 2008?

Softpedia writes:

"We've talked time and time again about the ongoing war between the two next-generation DVD formats, HD DVD and Blu-ray, and about what each of the two sides is doing in order to achieve victory in this conflict.
However, there are some pretty strong chances that both Sony's and Toshiba's (the two developers and main backers of said formats) plans might be hindered by none other than the Korean company Samsung and its dual-format player, the BD-UP5000."

Report: Harvey Smith No Longer with Midway Austin

Shacknews writes:

"Shacknews has separately learned from multiple reliable sources that Midway Austin designer Harvey Smith, who recently headed up the alien-themed shooter BlackSite: Area 51 (PC, PS3, X360), is no longer with Midway. One source explicitly alleges he was fired, but another suggests the departure was more mutual.
Smith recently made waves when he referred to the development of BlackSite as "so fucked up," citing problems within Midway and a general lack of proper management on the project. Over the course of the game's development and after its release, Smith trumpeted the game's political themes, characterizing it as "super fucking subversive." Smith has called for more developers to tackle complex issues in their games."

Can You Trust A Video Game Site That Runs Video Game Ads?

Confirmed: GameSpot's Gerstmann Fired

Rumors have been swirling today that Jeff Gerstmann, executive editor at CNET-owned major video game site GameSpot, was fired after giving a generally unimpressed review of Io Interactive's Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. Gerstmann awarded the game a 6.0. (Though Shacknews does not score its reviews, our own Kane & Lynch review was similar in its verdict.)

Shacknews can confidently confirm via its own sources that Gerstmann was indeed fired yesterday from his position at GameSpot.

Sony PS3 beats Nintendo Wii in Japan monthly sales (November)

Tokyo, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Sony PS3 outsold Nintendo Wii in Japan in November for the first time since the machines were launched last year, showing Sony may finally be overcoming a slow start versus its upstart rival.

Sony sold 183,217 PS3s in Japan in the four weeks to Nov. 25, topping sales of 159,193 Wii consoles, said game magazine publisher Enterbrain, a key watcher of trends in the sector.

The Best Videogame Themes

A game is often rated on its graphics, gameplay and its visual appeal. Sound too, but often its rated on the general sound and the quality of audio effects rather than the overall quality of its musical elements. And if there's one thing that makes a game totally memorable, it's a theme that you will find yourself humming over and over again when you least expect it.

The Angry Pixel takes a look at some of the most memorable videogame themes that we've come to hear, enjoy and keep humming to this day.

The Orange Box (PS3) Impressions: Volume Two

Yesterday, Michael Mcwhetor of Kotaku.com posted volume one of his impressions of the PlayStation 3 version of Valve's The Orange Box, the one handled by EA UK. It's arriving about two months later than its PC and Xbox 360 counterparts and amid some controversy.

Here is part of what he wrote:

"Having worked my way through the first three chapters of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, I stopped just before one of the episode's key vehicle sequences. This portion of the game was deemed one of the worst, in terms of technical performance. Assessments of those moments are mostly accurate. Yes, the frame rate takes some heavy dips, but at no point did it become unplayable. Slideshow? Nah. At least not for me..."

IGN Top 100 20-11

* Eligible games had to have been released no later than December 31, 2006 (perspective is a good thing)
* A number of factors were taken into consideration when selecting a winner: How good the game was compared to others of its time, its overall game design, how well it stands up over the years, how influential it has been in the realm of gaming and just plain how much fun we had playing it are all points for contention.
* The list is comprised of single, stand-alone titles and doesn't include compilations, expansion packs or add-ons.
* Titles with multiple editions such as collector's boxes, gold editions or direct re-releases have been consolidated into one single entry, with the edition deemed most deserving taking precedence.
* Updated versions of original titles were only included on the list if they were significantly different from their predecessors.

Assassin bit of a killjoy

The first brain-tweaking revelation in Assassin's Creed comes literally right at the beginning, so let's get it out in the open, spoiler alerts be damned: This is a game about a medieval hitman, set in the ancient Holy Land during the Third Crusade... and it takes place in the year 2012.

But if you've been following this three-years-in-the-making Ubisoft Montreal epic -- and it seems like everyone and their pet hunting falcon has been -- you probably already suspected as much. Assassin's Creed is a simulation within a simulation, a video game about a guy being forced to play a video game inside his own brain. Whoa.

Walt Disney Home Entertainments Chapek: Blu-ray Victory Only Delayed

According to Bob Chapek, Walt Disney Home Entertainment President, HD-DVD's recent momentum will not phase Blue Ray in the long run. This recent surge by HD-DVD will only slighlty delay the Blu-ray camp's inevitable victory.

"He said the surprise announcements of Paramount and DreamWorks this summer to exclusively back HD DVD temporarily confused the market, but Blu-ray's momentum continues unabated, and it should be revealed as the obvious victor during the coming year."

Breaking News: The Legend of Zelda 2008 Website is now online?

Yesterday Kotaku broke news that The Legend of Zelda 2008 Website is now online. However, according to Kotaku we should proceed with caution and not get too excited right away.

See the explanation below.

Kotaku reports:

"Now before you get all excited, let me tell you one thing. Don't get too excited. This "website" is really only a teaser page and in all likelihood, has nothing to do with Nintendo. A quick whois lookup reveals that the domain was registered through GoDaddy and seeing as Nintendo generally registers their domains through Network Solutions, the probability of this being an actual licensed project is slim to none. More probable is that this is some fan project that may or may not ever come to fruition. Anyone care to make further speculations?"

If you spend as much time as I do playing games and watching movies you don't get a lot of free time to meet that someone special. I recently stumbled across a great website that makes it extremely easy and quick to locate the right person for you.

The name of the site is DateHookup.com and believe it or not it is 100% free to join. Once you join you build your profile you are immediately able to begin searching profiles of other members. The profiles include multiple photographs and a personality description that includes what the person is looking for. There is also a section devoted to interests so you can be sure to match yourself with someone that you are comfortable and compatible with.

Members profile/blog pages can also be customized much like MySpace with the ability to add music, photos and change the look of the page itself to reflect your personality. Pretty Cool!

One awesome feature of the site is not just hooking you up with the right person but they also give you dating tips and ideas. You can even search for dating ideas in your local area.

Crave Talk: Nintendo must make a mobile phone

Playing games on a mobile phone is about as enjoyable as untangling a pair of headphones when you're stuck in the middle of a train during rush hour. The quality of titles available is very low, and today's phones simply aren't designed for fast, reliable button pressing. Things are getting better -- but for the love of thumb-tapping, Nintendo must make a mobile phone.

Xbox 360's Crysis Killer. War Hound is simply amazing in action.

Crysis, DirectX 10's brain child, on the PC has recently been bestowed as one the the most technically impressive games ever released. With visuals and physics that are absolutely off the charts it looked like Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 could not even begin to run the game. However, it looks like the Xbox 360 will be receiving a game that can can match Crysis, or possibly surpass, its visuals and physics.

What is this game?

Warhound, by developer Techland, is a non-linear first person perspective action shooter set in modern times. You take the role of an elite mercenary who will not hesitate to undertake even impossible tasks... for the right price. Governments, businessmen and various organizations hire you for hazardous missions around the globe.

No release date has be set as of yet. However, judging by the video below being still in development the finished product will be breathtaking.

See the video below to see the game in action.
